Ahead of the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, DR Sporten was given rare access to the meticulous preparation of Danish professional triathlete Magnus Ditlev.

The headline itself captures the nature of elite performance: “It is top secret.”

At the highest level of triathlon, small advantages matter, and athletes normally protect the knowledge, equipment choices and testing behind those advantages closely. In the DR feature, Ditlev opens part of that normally closed world and provides an insight into just how detailed the preparation for Hawaii had become.

FUSION was an important part of that process.

Rather than simply supplying Ditlev with a race suit, FUSION had spent the previous year working together with him on the development and testing of different material combinations. The objective was to create clothing capable of combining aerodynamic performance with the specific demands of racing for hours in the extreme heat and humidity of Kona.

The collaboration reflected Ditlev’s own approach to performance. With a background in engineering, he is known for systematically questioning equipment, position and aerodynamic details in the search for seconds and watts. Contemporary documentation from the period describes wind-tunnel testing of both his position and FUSION apparel as part of this process.

More than sponsorship

The DR story is an early example of what would become a defining part of the relationship between Magnus Ditlev and FUSION.

The athlete does not simply receive a finished product.

He becomes part of the development process.

Materials are tested. Combinations are compared. Aerodynamics are measured. Ideas are challenged. What works moves forward, and what does not is rejected.

The objective is not visibility.

The objective is performance.

For FUSION, professional sport therefore functions as an extension of R&D. Working with athletes such as Magnus Ditlev creates an environment where products and ideas are exposed to demands that are difficult to reproduce anywhere else.

Kona represents one of the most extreme examples: 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres on the bike and a marathon run in conditions where aerodynamics, thermoregulation, comfort and material behaviour all become part of the performance equation.

DR’s access to Ditlev’s preparations therefore documents something larger than one athlete preparing for one race.

It provides an independent glimpse into the development philosophy behind FUSION performance products:

Test. Measure. Learn. Improve.

And when the difference between winning and losing is measured in minutes, seconds and watts, details that appear small outside elite sport can become decisive.
